I was pretty keen to get out in the new Torq / BSS kit for the Road Nationals out at Buninyong. Due to an unfortunate bout of gastro the week prior I had not raced in any of the Bay Crits as a lead up, which actually meant I had quite fresh legs.
I am certainly not a roady at heart and struggled with the surging and antics going on in the bunch. In particular I was not familiar with some of the language being spoken! I did feel surprisingly quite comfortable up the major climb on the first couple of laps however found the descent each lap extremely nerve wracking with brakes slamming on and girls riding from one side of the road to the other. I guess I have never been a huge risk taker and found myself drifting to the back each time down the descent aiming to avoid the gravel rash! I did witness one girl almost take out the reigning National Champ Alexis Rhodes, when she decided to suddenly changes lines through a corner!
So I guess my positioning within the bunch really didn’t do me any favors when I was forced to try and make my way through the bunch after each descent. However I was quite happy in the end to get through 7 laps with the bunch and then punch out the last few laps with a small group to eventually finish in the top half of the field.
Definitely keen to get back to riding the dirt!
